Retail Shop Fit Out: Design, Joinery and Project Management Under One Roof
A retail shop fit out covers everything between an empty tenancy and opening day: layout, joinery, counters, displays, lighting, signage and the trades that tie it together. Brij & Co designs the space, builds the joinery and displays in our own workshop, and manages the fitout on site, so you deal with one company instead of five.

What a shop fit out includes
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Design and layout | Floor plan, customer flow, fixture positions and a finishes schedule, drawn to the landlord's or centre's design guidelines. |
| Approvals | Design submission to the centre or landlord, and coordination with any certifier the works need. |
| Joinery and displays | Counters, wall displays, shelving and storage built and pre-assembled in our workshop. |
| Site works | Partitions, ceilings, flooring, electrical and lighting, coordinated with licensed trades. |
| Signage and graphics | Shopfront signage, window graphics and in-store signs, printed and cut in-house. |
| Handover | Final inspection, defects fixed, and a store ready to stock. |
Fitouts by type of business
Barbershops and salons
Workstations with mirrors, power and storage at each chair, a durable reception counter and wash-area joinery that handles water. Our barbershop fitout in Port Macquarie used black steel frames, timber stations and wall lighting.
Cafés and restaurants
Service counters, back-bar joinery and display shelving, laid out so staff can move between the machine, the counter and the pass without crossing paths.
Retail stores and boutiques
Wall bays, feature tables, cash-wraps and fitting rooms, planned around your product range and how often it changes.
Kiosks and small tenancies
Shopping centre kiosks and small-format stores where every centimetre has to earn its keep. See kiosk design and build.

Why the joinery is built in-house
Most delays on a fitout happen at the joinery stage: a counter that arrives late or does not fit. Our woodworking, CNC routing, spray painting, metalwork, electrical and vinyl printing are all in our workshop, so we control that stage ourselves. Joinery is pre-assembled and checked before it goes to site, and on-site time goes on installing it.
It also means a counter, a display wall and a shopfront sign can share exactly the same colour, timber and lighting temperature.
Fitout project management
Every fitout has one project manager from brief to handover. That person is responsible for:
- Programme. A dated schedule from design sign-off to opening day, updated as the job moves.
- Landlord and centre requirements. Design submissions, access times, inductions and insurance paperwork.
- Trades. Coordinating electricians, plumbers, flooring and ceiling contractors around our joinery installs.
- Budget. An itemised quote at the start, and written variations if the scope changes.
- Handover. A walk-through with you before the keys come back, and defects fixed before we close out.
Choosing between retail fitout companies
When you compare fitout quotes, check three things. Who actually builds the joinery, and where? Is the quote itemised, or is it one lump sum with a list of exclusions? And who is your single point of contact on site? A cheaper quote that subcontracts the joinery and excludes approvals often ends up costing more.

I could not recommend Brij and Co enough! We've worked with a few stand builders over the years, but Neil and the team are the best at what they do.
The stand was beautifully executed, effective, and delivered at a very reasonable price.
They perfectly brought our vision for the stand to life. Since upgrading from more basic setups, we’ve been noticeably busier at shows, with customers often lining up around the stand to engage with our products. As a start-up surrounded by much larger, more established brands, that kind of impact is incredibly valuable.
The team is also warm, friendly, and super helpful during the stressful bump-in process, which is also a huge plus.
We had such a great experience working with Brij & CO for our stand at the Sydney Hair Festival. The booth was beautifully executed, and the quality and attention to detail really stood out. Everyone loved it!!
Neil was always very responsive and easy to deal with, and Anna was incredibly supportive and helpful throughout the process. They also created oversized props for us, which turned out amazing and made a big impact at the event.
Looking forward to next year's expo!
Brij&Co have built our (Tilley Soaps) Gift Fair stands for several years now and always do a fantastic job. Professional, reliable, and great attention to detail. Thanks to Neil and the team, we highly recommended.
We had such a beautiful experience with Brij & Co. They could bring my vision to life. Organising those type of events can be stressful but they made the experience very pleasant and easy. I will definitely be using their services again BKT (Beauty Keeps Transforming) in our next hair and beauty expo. Thank you so much Anna and Neil.
Brijnco is hands down the best fair stand manufacturer we've worked with. We were impressed by their innovative designs and commitment to delivering exactly what we needed for our event. The team at Brijnco is not only creative but also highly responsive. They listened to all our requirements and ensured everything was perfect. If you need a stand that stands out, Brijnco is your go-to choice!

Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in a retail shop fit out?
Design and layout, approvals, joinery and displays, partitions, ceilings, flooring, electrical and lighting, signage, and final handover. The exact scope depends on the tenancy and whether it is a new store or a refurbishment.
How long does a shop fit out take?
Small tenancies can be fitted out in a few weeks once designs are approved; larger stores take longer. We give you a dated programme with the quote.
How much does a commercial shop fitout cost?
It depends on the size, the finishes and how much of the existing tenancy can be kept. We provide an itemised quote after the design stage. Our retail store fitout cost guide explains the main cost drivers.
Do you work in shopping centres?
Yes. We work to centre design guidelines, submit designs for approval and schedule works around centre access rules.
Do you do fitouts outside Sydney?
Yes. We work in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and can deliver joinery and displays to other states.
